Nene Chicken Singapore: Tasting One of South Korea's Favorite Fried Chicken Brands

The word Ne in Korean means Yes. That is why the name Nene Chicken literally means  Yes! Yes! Chicken.

Nene Chicken was founded in South Korea in 1999 and expanded from a poultry supplier to making delicious, fresh, cooked-to-order food to more than 1,000 stores in Seoul. They are known as the "sauce-coated chicken specialist," and since then, they have been delighting customers with freshly cooked fried chicken.

First Impressions

We tried their outlet located in Bukit Panjang Plaza. They have a modern rustic interior that is a bit spacious. They have metallic stools, some with wooden top, so it will be a bit uncomfortable if you intend to stay in the store for long hours.

You can easily spot the kitchen from the entrance which is unpleasant for an establishment in the food business. In my opinion, the kitchen itself should not be visible in plain sight except for warming bins that keep cooked food hot.

The counter is very accessible though. The overhead menu display is big, clear, and informative. At the left side, you can easily see the types of payments they accept which is a plus factor.

The Staff

The staff in charge of the cashier was very courteous and friendly. She recommends their most popular food items and their current promotions. She even informed us what card payment to use in order for us to avail more discount.

The Service

Food preparation was fast and the food we ordered were at our table for less than ten minutes. They provided us with disposable hand gloves so we can consume our chicken delights using our hands. They also gave complimentary wet tissues.

The Food

We got ourselves two big meals as suggested by their friendly staff at the cashier: a 12-Piece Bulgogi Meal that comes with two regular drinks and two Corn Salads for S$ 25.50; and a 5-Piece Fried Chicken Meal that also comes with two regular drinks and two Curly Fries for S$ 23.50.

The Fried Chicken was well coated with batter but looks dry. Yes, its crispy. But one bite is all it takes and we confirmed that it was indeed dry through and through. The batter was nice and tasty though. However, the seasoning did not penetrate the chicken meat and taste bland. You can salvage it by dipping it with any sauce available.

The Bulgogi Chicken on the other hand, is a different story. The chicken was beautifully glazed by thick bulgogi sauce and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds. It was tender, savory, and mildly sweet with a bit of smoky flavor. The marinade seeped through the chicken meat and it was tantalizingly delicious.

The Corn Salad was packaged in small tubs. The corn kernels were mixed with slices of crab meat sticks and light salad cream. It has a unique taste which may not appeal to everyone. It was very sweet that we were not able to finish it all.

I personally enjoyed the Japchae. The sweet potato noodles were soft and slippery. It has a nice blend of soy sauce and fresh taste of thinly sliced carrots, onion, and spinach. It has an overall sweetness with slight crunch from vegetables. The sesame seeds adds a pleasant aroma that tingles your palate.

Japchae was priced at S$ 6.50 per serving.

The Curly Fries were another delight that we all liked. It was golden brown and perfectly coated with seasoning blend. They were crisp and very addictive.

Curly Fries

Our only gripe with the Curly Fries is that it does not come with Cheese Dips. You have to purchase them separately for S$ 1.90 per dip.

The Cheese Dip really complements the Curly Fries and elevates its savorness to a whole new level.

Our Take

We highly recommend the Japchae and the Bulgogi Chicken. They are both a must-try if you are a first timer.

They have other tempting Korean dishes on their menu, but that will be for next time.
