Don Don Donki was originally known as Don Quijote, a Japanese discount retail chain located mostly in the Asia-Pacific region. It has over 160 outlets across Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Taiwan, and Hawaii. They carry a wide range of products from food, groceries, electronics, and clothing. Don Don Donki is also known to have extended retail hours compared to other retail stores.
First Impressions
The Don Don Donki at JEM is the biggest outlet to date in Singapore. It has two levels. The first level is where you can find a lot of interesting Japanese-brand items to buy at discounted price.
The second level is where the Japanese foodcourt is. This level can also be accessed by escalator from the first level.
The sushi area doubles as their kitchen and payment counter. It is vibrantly decorated with assortment of Japanese scribbles written on flags and banners. You can also see promotional signage of different items at discounted rate.
After purchasing your sushi and/or sashimi, you can secure a table from the foodcourt and consume it or...
... if there is a vacant spot, you can choose to enjoy your food at their designated sushi dining area that is separated from the hustle and bustle of the foodcourt.
The Staff
There is no staff around the premises other than the ones at the counter which also has its meat cutting area. You simply pay for the sushi that you got and you are good to go.
You can also see the food handlers who are professionally cutting fresh seafood meat for sushi and sashimi.
The Service
Since everything is self-serve, you can freely go around and see the enormous variety of ready-to-eat packs of sushi, sashimi, and other assorted Japanese seafood delicacies at the display area.
Here are some of their ready-to-eat packs that you can easily grab, pay, and take it away or dine with it.
The Food
We got three packs for ourselves and first on the list was this Boiled Shrimps. These are fresh large shrimps that were already cleaned, deveined, and boiled perfectly. It was tender and tasted a little sweet. If you want to spice it up, you can put a little wasabi and dip it in Japanese soy sauce.
They say that eating boiled shrimp may promote heart and brain health due to its content of omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidant astaxanthin.
Boiled Shrimps was priced at S$ 3.90 per 100 grams.

Next was my favorite Chuka Iidako. This are seasoned baby octopuses that are bite-size and easy to eat. It was covered with thick red sauce and sesame seeds. The baby octopus was soft, chewy, sweet, and very addictive.
Did you know that eating baby octopus is good for reproductive health? It is said to cure impotence and heighten sexual libido.
Chuka Iidako was priced at S$ 3.80 per 100 grams.

And lastly, we got the Aburi Salmon Sushi pack. It was a set of three different types of salmon sushi that were broiled aburi style. This means the salmon were blowtorched before serving.
One type is the plain aburi salmon, the other was with teriyaki sauce, and the third one was topped with heaps of roe or the orange-red colored ripe egg masses of fish.
The vinegared Japanese rice ball was delicious and sticky. It greatly compliments the rich flavors of the salmon meat. It was delectable and fully satisfying.
Aburi Salmon Sushi was priced at S$ 14.80.

Our Take
We only tried three types of sushi and seafood from their wide selection of sushi. We will definitely be back to try the others. I heard that they also accept orders for unagi dishes. We will also try that for another blog.
