18 Chefs Singapore: Trying Heart Attack Fried Rice and BYOC Eighteen Chefs

Eighteen Chefs chain of restaurant is popular among teenagers, young adults, and families because of their delectable but affordable western cuisine. They prepare fast quality food at affordable prices. It was founded by Roger Wong and Chef Benny Seo Teo.

First Impressions

Eighteen Chefs at Yew Tee Point is an eye-catcher because of the prominent signage and open dining area setup. They have a modern rustic interiors with stylish wooden tables for both individual and communal seating.

Also noticeable is the vibrant feature wall showcasing caricatures of their best selling food items.

The dining area is also well lit and what caught my attention is their custom lighting shaped as 18C resembling their Eighteen Chefs' logo.

The Staff

The staffs are very young who seems like students working during their school break. The server who attended to us just asked how many are we in our group and ushered us to a vacant table for four. She handed over four sets of menu to each of us and an Order Sheet for us to place our orders. After that, we had no more interaction with her.

The Service

After jotting down our orders on the Order List, I need to immediately pay at the counter so that our food order can be transmitted to the kitchen and they can start the preparation. Then the cashier mentioned that we need to ask any of their servers for our cutleries. I did just that. I saw one of them getting the cutleries and then sterilizing the utensils and wrapping in table napkins. I give it a thumbs up for adding the sterilization process in their food service.

The Food

For appetizer we got their Cheesy Fries which was served on a small basket plate with baking paper. Although the fries itself was crisp, I was disappointed with the cheese sauce. It was pale in color which was almost whitish and the sauce was also not thick. There was very little cheese flavor.

Cheesy Fries was priced at S$ 4.80.

The next appetizer was a six-piece Roasted Chicken Drumettes. These golden-brown chicken drumettes were crisp, tender, and juicy. You can savor all the spices that were used as a marinade and you can enjoy its finger-licking yumminess.

One thing that makes Eighteen Chefs appealing to youngsters is the inclusion of BYOC meals in their menu. It stands for Be Your Own Chef. It's an interesting concept where you can choose a base of either baked rice or pasta, your choice of sauce, and the main ingredient.

My daughter has chosen Cheese Baked Rice with White Creamy Sauce and Chicken Sausage. I was surprised to see the end product which was a perfectly baked cheesy rice with slices of sausage. The Cheese was creamy and it stretches out when you scoop up a bit. The white rice was steaming hot and fluffy. The chicken sausage was a bit burnt and dry.

BYOC meals were priced at S$ 9.40 with a free scoop of ice cream for students.

My son ordered BYOC Cheesy Baked Rice Popcorn Chicken which essentially is the same as my daughter's except that my son picked popcorn chicken as the main ingredient. The popcorn chicken was crispy and tasty. It blends well with the creamy cheese goodness of this dish.

Next in our mains were the Heart Attack Fried Rice meals which are signature dishes of Eighteen Chefs.

My wife got the Heart Attack Fried Rice with Half Spring Chicken. The fried rice was steamed rice cooked with black sauce and other spices then topped with chopped spring onion. It has that unique taste that they say its "artery clogging good." The the catch is, you have to eat it while its hot and warm, otherwise the outside layer will feel crusty and a bit tough to chew.

The spring chicken was moist and tender. The skin was crisp and perfectly seasoned. It would be better if they don't place the dish on a baking paper because it cuts through when slicing the meat.

Heart Attack Fried Rice with Half Spring Chicken was priced at S$ 14.80.

I ordered for the Heart Attack Fried Rice with 180 grams of beef. I asked my steak to be medium rare. The meat was already cut after grilling showing the medium rare that I want. Trying the steak on its own you can smell the smoky aroma. The meat was soft, tender, and juicy however, it lacks flavor. It was not seasoned well. You can only appreciate it when you dip it in the chili-garlic sauce that comes with it.

Heart Attack Fried Rice with Beef was priced at S$ 17.80.

For our desserts, we ordered two Black Beauty Ice Cream with Brownie. It was a tempting combo of  scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice creams with rich and moist brownie. Then drizzled with sweet chocolate syrup and topped with chocolate powder. It was like a delectable punch of chocolate-over-chocolate.

Black Beauty Ice Cream with Brownie priced at S$ 6.60.

Our Take

Overall we were satisfied with the food quality and affordability specially the BYOC. However, we find the Heart Attack meals a bit pricey. We highly recommend the BYOC meals which you can customize to your preference. They also have a wide spread of western cuisine that we haven't tried like the pastas, seafood, and burgers.

Operations

They are open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM. They accept all major credit cards, NETS, and cash payments.
