Fun Toast Singapore: Freshly Brewed Traditional Coffee with Breakfast Meal

Fun Toast is a traditional coffeehouse chain that started way back in 1941. Yes, it was the war-torn period. During that time, the coffeehouse was known as Kheng Nam Hong, and the founding coffee maestros perfected the art of Nanyang coffee roasting and charcoal-grilled kaya toasts.

After the business was passed to younger generations, it was rebranded as Fun Toast and became a household name for great-tasting coffee.

First Impressions

The coffeehouse in Junction 10 is small but they extended the dining area outside this outlet where you can enjoy your meals semi-alfresco. The ambiance is bright and vibrant. You can see lots of people queueing up early in the morning to have breakfast.

The interior design is contemporary and has an open ceiling. The counter, the kitchen, and the collection area are connected. The dining area, although small, is spacious enough for a small group to sit comfortably.

The Staff

The order taker was clear and concise when you question him about their menu. Serious-looking and have that no-nonsense attitude. Maybe because he finds his method efficient to accommodate all the people queueing outside.

The Service

Their concept is self-serve and self-collect so the only interaction we had with their staff was during order taking and payment at the counter.

The Food

My wife doesn't like sugar but likes milk on her coffee so we ordered the breakfast set meal with Kopi C Kosong. This means a cup of black coffee with evaporated milk and no sugar.

The coffee was brewed and aromatic just like how my wife wanted it. I was never a coffee drinker so when my wife says it's good, it definitely is.

The coffee set comes with two Soft-Boiled Eggs. You crack it open and pour the eggs on a small plate. Then put some dark soy sauce and white ground pepper to enhance the flavor. You can scramble the eggs a bit to have that silky consistent texture.

The Kaya Butter Toast is also included in the coffee set and is a popular breakfast dish in Singapore. It has two thin slices of bread that are grill-toasted. Then generous amounts of butter and kaya, a jam made of coconut milk, eggs, and sugar, were spread on each toast.

The toasts were so thin you can hear the crisp sound when you bite it. The buttery aroma and the sweetness of kaya blend together for that delectable treat.

Kopi C Kosong with Kaya Butter Toast Set was priced at S$ 5.20.

We also tried the Chicken Toastburger with Fries. The bun was grill-toasted that gives evident burns on the bun's crown and heel. The chicken patty tastes similar to those packed patties that you can buy in groceries. It has a starchy flavor and there was no hint of chicken taste. The lettuce was soggy and not crisp. The cheese slice was like the ordinary cheese slices that you have at home. There is nothing special about this burger.

The fries were crispy but unsalted. So you have to sprinkle it with salt to taste.

Chicken Toastburger with Fries was priced at S$ 5.60 together with the Milo drink.

The Iced Milo was served without sugar. Just the way I want it.
