Fish & Co Singapore: Fresh Seafood Served in a Pan

Fish & Co. is a seafood chain restaurant that boasts and specializes in serving westernized fresh seafood delicacies in stainless metal pans.

First Impressions

The Fish & Co. outlet we tried was the one at Westgate in Jurong East. It is at the first level of the mall just opposite Brotzeit German Bier Bar and Restaurant.

This outlet has a very fancy look that is eye-catching. The sides have floaties, like those used in boats, decorated around the restaurants' perimeter. They have two dining areas, an air-conditioned one, and an al-fresco type.

Their setup is contemporary with wooden tables and communal benches. The al-fresco area has ceiling fans installed to offer a breeze of cool air during hot days.

The Staff

The staff that welcomed us and the one that took our order were different and we have different experiences with the two of them.

The staff that greeted us on our arrival and had us seated at our table was warm and friendly. She even took the effort to ensure that we were seated at a table for a group of five people.

On the other hand, we had a really bad experience with the waiter who took and served our order.

The Service

We were among the first group to be seated and our orders are taken. So far, everything is fine. Then another group came and they were seated as well. Another five-people group came after and were seated too. The orders of both of these newcomers were taken by the same waiter.

We have waited for our food for nearly 45 minutes when noticed that the orders of the group with five-people that came last were already being served. Their orders were obviously more than ours. And we also spotted a couple of dishes that were the same as what we ordered. Alright, that is fine.

We then waited another 15 minutes or so when the food for the group that came after us were served next. I was really confused. Is the service on a "first-come, last to serve" basis?

Our food arrived after waiting for another 30 minutes. That is one-and-a-half hour total waiting time. We were very disappointed. We talked to the waiter about why we were being served last when a couple of our dishes were also served in the other group.

He didn't answer and just continue doing his job of placing our food on our table. Totally brushing us off.

We were starving at that time and I have no energy to meet up with their manager to complain so we just go ahead and started eating. I also don't want to ruin that wonderful day.

The Food

The starters were served first. After this, the waiter put distinctive wooden fish-shaped placemats on our table.

They name their French fries as "chips" which made it confusing because the restaurant's dishes were American style. Chip is a British term for fries.

Anyway, the Classic Chips were served hot, topped with grated cheese, and sprinkled with dried seaweed flakes. It was crisp with every bite and you can taste the hint of saltiness. My kids loved this.

The price was S$ 7.95.

Next, they served the Mashed Potato with Cream. Ironically, it was not warm when it was served but the presentation was interesting. It resembles a small volcano where a crater was filled with cream. It should have tasted better if it was served hot. Even the cream was not warm.

We ordered Paella Rice for each of us because our intention was to share the main courses. It was served in a small stainless pan. The rice was a bit sticky and colored orange because of the fusion of seafood juices, saffron, and other seasonings. It contains raisins, slices of green and red bell peppers. It was a great compliment for the main courses.

It was served warm and it was also flavorful. It can be a dish on its own. It has a tangy taste because of the mixture of seafood juices.

The price was S$ 5.95.

The New York Fish & Chips was a battered white fish stuffed with Parmesan Cheese and deep-fried until golden brown. It was topped with a lemon butter sauce that adds flavor and tanginess to the already flavorful dish. It came together with golden crisp chips or fries with a special white sauce and a lemon wedge on the side.

The price was S$ 20.95.

Their best seller Fried Calamari was my personal favorite. The calamari slices were thick which was nice. Each slice was evenly coated with their special batter mixture. It was very crunchy and the meat was chewy soft. It was bursting with flavor because it was perfectly seasoned. It was a delight to eat on its own. But dunking it in their special white sauce gives a different level of flavor. I also tried to squeeze a bit of lemon to make it taste tangy.

The price was S$ 11.95.

The last of our main courses was the famous Mad About Cheese Broth Pot. When it was served to us, the first thing we noticed was that it was not that presentable as shown in their menu. For one, the inner side of the pot got hardened splatters of sauce and cheese. The guys at the kitchen should have cleaned this first before serving it to their customers.

Another thing that disappoints us was that the waiter failed to inform us that this broth pot already comes with paella rice. And we ended up having more paella rice because the waiter did not tell us about this.

Anyway, forgetting about the mess, the dish itself is also their best seller. It has prawns, mussels, scallops, clams, generous amounts of cheese, and... of course, paella rice.

This dish was like a medley of flavors clinging onto the seafood because it was baked with savory broth full of different spices. Adding to that complex delicious taste was the oozing melted cheese everywhere. Melted cheese on the clams, into the sliced prawns, in the mussel meat. Every mouthful was heavenly delightful with a mellow taste of seafood goodness.

The price was S$ 46.95.

Our Take

Overall, we were happy with the food. There a serious improvement needed when it comes to food service though. I hope the management will do something about this.

I highly recommend the Mad About Cheese Broth Pot and the Fried Calamari.
