Brotzeit Singapore: A Taste of German Meat Platter

If you are a meat-lover or simply craving for mouth-watering German cuisine - and beer - then Brotzeit German beer bar and restaurant is the place for you.

In Singapore, they currently have four outlets: Vivo City, Raffles City, Katong, and Westgate. We visited and tried the one in Westgate as it is the nearest outlet from our place.
Let us start digging with our review.

First Impressions

Brotzeit's setting at Westgate is semi-al-fresco as they have both open-air and air-conditioned areas. They have a contemporary setup with noticeable bottled beer storage that doubles as interior decoration.

If you are a non-alcoholic drinker, you may feel daunted since they serve beers to their customers but generally, you can experience casual dining quite comfortably.

The Staff

You will have to wait at the frontage for you to be seated by their friendly waitress. If there is a queue it might take a while before you can get inside. Once seated, they will introduce you to their full menu and give recommendations which is a plus point for me. They are very accommodating and really spends time to explain to you their platters and set meals. They even ask if we will be paying by credit card as they have occasional discount offers from major banks.

The Service

We came in on a Friday when they have a large crowd of customers so their speed of service is not that fast but is still reasonably acceptable. They serve the food with care and smile, unlike other restaurants that just place the food on the table (with a bit of a "bang" sound) and leave.

Again, as commonly experienced, I find their service when it comes to payment slow. You ask for the bill, you give them your credit card, and you wait... and wait. That is why I appreciate restaurants that have a self-serve counter that you can just stand, go for payment, and leave.

The Food

We ordered what the waitress recommended to us, a serving of Brotzeitplatte with Bavarian Ribs. We thought that it is good for two but when the food arrived, we were surprised that the portions can be good enough for three-to-five persons. Or two really famished couple. 😅

The platter set comes with three main dishes.

First is the Schweinshaxn which is a German version of crispy oven-roasted pork knuckle. This is what we are very eager to try and it did not disappoint us.

The skin is very crispy that you can hear it crackling when you try to put down the knife through it. It crackles more when you bite it. The meat is so tender and moist. You can feel the fatty layer melt in your mouth. It blends perfectly with ketchup or mustard dip. They also have chili dip if you want it spicy.

The second dish is an assortment of three German sausages: Nürnberger, Bauernwurst, Thüringer Rostbratwurst.

The spiral-formed sausage is the Thüringer sausage which is a type of smoked semi-dry sausage made from cured ingredients that makes its taste unique.

The long sausage is the Bauernwurst better known as the farmer's sausage. It is a combination of both pork and beef and is a bit salty to taste.

The small sausages are the Nürnberger which is a pork sausage and has a common sausage taste. Among the three, we like the Thüringer sausage best.

Here is a tip for you, if you really want to taste the difference among these sausages, try nibbling a bit of pickle and drink before trying the other sausage.

Third dish is a half-slab of Bavarian Pork Ribs. These tender ribs were grilled to perfection that the meat can easily fall off the bones. We liked the combination of marinade ingredients as it accentuated the taste of the pork meat. It was perfectly glazed as well and this became my wife's instant favorite.

We have no room for desserts (we were supposed to order and try their Dessert Medley) so we will leave this for next time. We finished off by washing down those meaty goodness with refreshing Lemongrass Säfte. It was topped with peppermint leaves and a slice of lime for that tangy-minty taste.

Our Take

It was a heavy dinner and we highly recommend the Brotzeitplatte Ribs set as it is a fairly good deal for S$ 108 inclusive of two sides of your choice. You get to try their best seller dishes in one platter.

So if we awaken your cravings for meat, come down and try it.

Operations

They are open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM across all their outlets.  Major credit cards, NETS, and cash payments are accepted here.
