Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul Sunway Pyramid: A Nostalgic Taste of Old Penang Road Local Food

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul started out as a small food cart selling Chendul, an iced sweet dessert that contains droplets of green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup, at Penang Road way back in 1936. From then on, their dessert & special Penangite foods became so popular that they already established a signature taste that every local is attracted to.

First Impressions

Teochew Chendul has a very simple menu, that you can browse from the frontage of the restaurant, categorized into three: Main Meals, Delights, and Chendul.

This eatery has a nostalgic interior design which gives a familiar feel of Penang Malaysia. It has wooden tables and wooden stools for you to sit on.

The Staff

There is not much interaction with their staff since you need to order straight from the counter and collect the food yourself from the collection area. They don't offer any recommendations and leave you to yourself to pick from their menu.

The Service

After ordering, you will be provided with a pager buzzer that will light up, vibrates, and rings when your food is ready for collection.

The Food

For starters, we tried their Fried Popiah, which was a four-piece spring roll cut into halves. It was garnished with lettuce and slices of cucumber.

It was crispy to bite and very enjoyable, especially when dipped with their special sweet and sour sauce. You will appreciate the authentic flavor coming from the combination of local Malaysian ingredients rolled into spring roll wrappers and deep-fried until golden brown.

For mains, we tried their Nasi Lemak or rice-in-cream meals which is famous because of how rice is cooked with coconut milk giving that fragrant and satisfying flavor.

Pandan Nasi Lemak Rendang Sotong is a meal containing pandan-flavored nasi lemak with soft and chewy cuttlefish slices engulfed in a rich, fragrant, and mildly spicy blend of aromatic ingredients.

Garnished with roasted peanuts, dried anchovies, hard-boiled egg, slices of cucumber, and a generous serving of sambal sauce. Sambal is a hot relish made of vegetables or fruits and spices.

Pandan Nasi Lemak Chicken Kunyit has similar dish content as the one mentioned above except that the meat is chicken marinated in turmeric and deep-fried. It was crisp and flavorful and goes well with the pandan-flavored rice. Dipping it with sambal brings a fusion of spiciness and savory taste with every bite.

For desserts, my wife doesn't want to try their chendul although that is their specialty. She wanted to try Ice Kacang instead which is similar to the Philippines' halo-halo. Ice kacang is a cold and sweet dessert made with a heap of shaved ice served with sweet corn, grass jelly, red beans, nata de coco, and agar agar. Topped with a colorful red rose and sarsi syrups and sprinkled with roasted peanuts. And finally drizzled with evaporated milk and palm sugar syrup.

It was very refreshing and cooling and pleasantly hit our sweet spot.

Our Take

If you are looking for a quick bite for brunch or late lunch after shopping at Sunway Pyramid, we definitely recommend Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. Especially during summer, nothing beats chendul or ice kacang to cool down your body.

Maybe next time, we will try their famous chendul.
