Tonight is one of the nights that, after the kids were tucked to bed at 10:30 PM, my wife and I have this sudden urge to go out for a night out. Well, alright. Maybe we were not that lazy and decided to call it our “blogging night.” Still, in our casual home attire, we walked our way to McCafe at Yew Tee place armed with our laptops and a train of thoughts of what we will be blogging about.
First Impressions
McCafe is a nice place to hang-out and chill especially when most of the establishments in Yew Tee Point mall were already closed at that time of the night. Situated adjacent to the McDonald’s fast food joint (although at some branches, the McCafe can be found inside the premises of McDonald’s), this café boasts an environment that is stylish but doesn't come close with that of Starbucks. The ambiance is a bit different when compared to McDonald’s as it is quieter inside. Most people are “working” with their laptops so we definitely feel at ease bringing our own.Their counter is small which houses the espresso-making machines, the cakes and pastries cooler, and the cashier. This branch only has a few round tables with cushioned seats and one long table with high stools for group seating.
The Staff
There are usually two baristas at the front line doing both cashier work and preparation of espresso-based coffee drinks. They greet you with a smile and ask how they can help you. Once you order your drinks, they will immediately prepare them for you. If you have the leisure time, you can watch them over the counter and see how they skillfully make your drinks in a creative and artful manner. The Service
It's self-service here and you need to pay as you place your orders at the counter. After payment, they diligently prepare your food and drinks on the spot.
The Food
We got ourselves some drinks and cake slices to fuel our blogging time. I had a cold Frappe Berry Mocha with a slice of brownie bearing a catchy name – “Darn Good Brownie.”What I love about the frappe is the whipped cream topped with the perfect blend of coffee and chocolate. And to make it more exciting, they swirled a generous helping of chocolate syrup. The twist in this cold drink is that it was hinted with berry syrup. So imagine the taste of fusing chocolate, coffee, and berry in every sip.
The single slice of chocolate brownie alone is enough for you to say “darn!” It is soft and the chocolate in the middle is dense and rich. Absolutely heavenly...
My wife ordered a hot Mochaccino and a slice of Walnut Cheese Cake. The Mochaccino is what I call art in a cup. I saw how they prepare this cup of joe and it involves quite a number of steps.
From mixing the chocolate powder with coffee, topping it with nice white froth, sprinkling it with fine choco-powder, and finishing with an artful design using a generous line of rich and thick chocolate syrup.
The Walnut Cheese Cake is nothing to brag about as it tastes like a common cheesecake except that it is dense. The toppings were flavored with a hint of sourness. Good thing there was a nicely adorned caramel whip to stir sweetness up a bit.
